A SIMPLIFIED MEANING OF PASTURE

Definition

The term pasture (from the Latin word pastus, meaning: "to feed") is a piece of land containing forage crops of both grasses and legumes which are fed to animals in either preserved or fresh form.
Some examples of forage crops are as follows:

Grasses:
  • Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum)
  • Guinea grass (Panicum maximum)
  • Spear grass (Imperata cylindrica)
  • Carpet grass (Axonopus compresus)
  • Southern gamba (Andropogon gayanus)
Legumes:
  • Mucuna (Mucuna utilis)
  • Centro (Centrosema pubescence)
  • Stylo (Stylosanthes guianensis)

Types Of Pasture

There are basically two types of pasture which includes:
  • Natural Pasture; and
  • Artificial or Established Pasture
Natural Pasture: This is a piece of land which contains forage crops of grasses and legumes that are not deliberately planted by man. This type if pasture may contains some grasses which are not palatable to the animals that graze on them.
Artificial Pasture: contrary to natural Pasture, this type of pasture contains forage crops of grasses and legumes which are deliberately planted by man. Artificial pasture (also known as sown or established pasture) is most desirable for many commercial farmers because of its range benefits which include: high quality grasses and legumes which are free from disease infestation, it gives room for proper management, it is resistant to continuous trampling by farm animals etc.
