RANCH, RANCHING AND ITS IMPORTANCE

Ranch

A ranch is an area of land (which is usually very large and with different structures) in which livestock are raised for the production of meat, milk, wool, hides and skin. Ranches are mostly common in temperate, dry areas, such as the Pampas region of South America, the western United States, the Prairie Provinces of Canada, the Australian outback and in Africa. In a ranch contains structures such as farmhouse, milking shed, a shed, a slaughterhouse (or abattoir).

Ranching

This is the practices of keeping livestock such as cattle and and sheep for the production of meat, milk, wool, hides as well as skin. People who practice ranching are known as ranchers. Ranching is carried out in a ranch.
Ranchers unlike nomadic herders requires a considerable standard of technical know-how and a proper management ability to carry out their job.

Importance of Ranching

Some of the importance of Ranching include:

  • Production of livestock: Ranching is a major source of the production of livestock such as: cattle, sheep, horse etc.
  • Production of milk: Ranching is also important for the production of milk from cows(a female cattle).
  • High source of animal protein: It is a source of meat which is very protenous.
  • A major source of wool production: Ranching of livestock such as: sheep (eg Merino breed) is a good source of wool production.
